Week 4 – Creative Sustainability/Sustainable Creativity

This week I wanted to go off on a slight meander.  The purpose of this blog is to explore, in a gentle way, all things that make life sustainable.  I don’t just mean recycling, thrifting, turning off the tap when you are brushing your teeth – all important of course but I also want to explore small tweaks we can make to make our entire, whole, beautiful life more sustainable.  You could replace sustainable then with loads of other words; fun, beautiful, worthwhile or how about, creatively fulfilling.

The first blog I ever wrote was about creativity and how people perceive that they are not creative at all or not creative enough.  I hear that as: ‘I don’t have enough confidence in myself’.

The simple fact is, we all have the capacity to be creative.  If you don’t take action however, you will find that you are an imaginative person but not, necessarily, a creative one.  The key, is having the confidence to TAKE THE ACTION. To quote Linda Naiman of Creativity Works:

‘Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing.’

So I asked: What stops us from taking action?  What holds us back from writing that beautiful poem or painting that sunset landscape that burns within us and what if we overcome that fear and rediscovered the childish fun and pure joy that comes with putting pen to paper or brush to paint, without worrying about the outcome.

I will explore this more next week but in the meantime, think about what creative activities you really enjoyed as a child and have a think about who encouraged you in your creativity.  Write it down.  Go deep, you will be surprised by what you discover.  Kate x
